Move In Day/ The GT struggle

I am convinced that the reason why orientations exist is because if move in day were to be a student’s first experience with a school, very bad things would happen

However, I do give major props to Housing and GTPD for making move in relatively smooth given the fact that they have to close down major roads like Techwood to get the students moved in.

Personally, I went into move with a game plan. I timed my arrival to be at a low traffic hours. All the move in parts fell into place. Record setting pace. In and out like Seal Team Six. Bam.

So I was going to write my next blog post about move in but now I have to change the subject

So that little bit up there I wrote about a week ago shortly after the actual move in day. Then a combination of writer’s block/GT craziness/homework/laziness set in. So far some of the Georgia Tech difficulty has lived up to the hype, but I got a few rants.
First.
We are the Georgia Institute of Technology. The finest institution when it comes to nerdy things and electronic gadgets. So you would think that when it comes to the online part of classes such as homework would be all internal, free, and easily accessible.
Nah.
I have way too many different locations that I go to do and submit homework. T-square Assignments, T-Square Tests, Pearson Mastering, Pearson MyMathLab, Owlv2, Late Nite Labs, TA's, Problem Sets from the Book, ect.
Not only would the Institute be just a little easier but maybe I could have just a little more time to actually do the assignments than always checking the various sources for assignments. Georgia tech has a section on T-square for assignments so why don’t they use it?

I’m hoping to up my blog posts in the week to cover a slight back log of blog-able things (Rush, First week of classes, Extra circulars, Tech life, Football ect.)
Till then. Go Jackets!

FASET

FASET. Orientation at Georgia Tech. One of Tech’s many acronyms.

FASET stands for “Familiarization and Adaptation to the Surroundings and Environs of Tech”

That’s a mouthful.

FASET is almost always listed among a student’s first few interactions with the Institute. It consists of learning about the basic traditions, practices, and features of Tech.

Basically, knowing almost no one, R.A.T.S. (or Recently Acquired Tech Students) attempt to awkwardly connect with the most people they can. This comes in the form of icebreaker games that probably lasted for at least half of the whole orientation.

And trust me with my awkwardness, I needed those icebreakers too. But at some point enough is enough.

Granted these icebreakers happened in a small group chosen at random with people you may actually have nothing in common with, looking at this from a practical perspective it actually may have been helpful for people who have issues with introductions. It was an interesting way in finding similarities among a group of people to talk about.  It may have even given people major confidence that they now know at least ONE person at Tech. Also, the groups now have an older FASET leader that the RATS could now look up too on campus as a mentor, adviser sort of role. And at the very least, at least everyone has one thing in common, you chose Georgia Tech the best freakin’ engineering and technology school ever to be your college.

But onto other things than awkward students.

The information given from the Institute during day one was broad and fast. Basically in a summary “If it deals with the school it’s on Buzzport somewhere”.

The day ended with one of the more significant events, a party on the top floor of the CRC. Yes, the same awkward kids as before were now gettin’ down to Pitbull in one of the packed side rooms in the campus recreation center, penthouse level.

Luckily, that’s only half of the story, or half of the RATS should I say. Personally, I was with the other half participating in sports such as volleyball, indoor soccer, and basketball on the top floor.

And, wearing an Atlanta Hawks shirt that day you know my 3 point game was fire (shout out to #26).

Day two’s primary focus was around a campus club fair, a very important aspect of life at a college where stress and Adderall overdoses are the two primary health concerns. In all seriousness, it is important to add free time activities to your schedule. In this case a busier schedule may actually help you study better by releasing stress through extracurriculars. The best touch to it all was an appearance of the Ramblin’ Wreck and Buzz. Got a selfie with Buzz and awesome pictures of the wreck (can be seen above the news on the right and left side)

After an hour in the Atlanta mid-day heat, Tech runs you over to the Barns and Noble, takes your everlasting picture for your Buzzcard, then sends you on your way back home till you return on campus during move in day.

I hope my hair at least looks good in my picture.

This is gonna be quite a year.

Thanks for reading Ramblin’ on Georgia Tech and Go Jackets!

Welcome

So this is my first post. Shall we begin?

The journey into blogging has already begun for me. I'm sure as I learn this process more there will be some section that I can put this information in, but for now I am going to lay down the basic idea and guidelines that I will use for this blog.

1. This blog is based on a students (me) journey through the wonderful school that is the Georgia Institute of Technology. I have made this blog before I have moved in for the fall semester of my first year.

2. This blog will cover many aspects of Tech from a STUDENTS perspective. I will cover news, classes, sports events, regular events, fun activities, and so on as I encounter them as a student on a journey through college.

3. I intend this blog to be a mixture of a current events report and a personal diary. It will be used by me to look back on events and things that happen during my college years and potentially by the reader for multiple purposes such as nostalgia, as a first hand source for all things Tech, or even just to see how a certain life progressed through college/Georgia Tech

As a final note, this process will be changing for me. I have no blogging experience, and with that comes a learning curve. On top of that, like most engineers, my writing ability is definitely not on par with our liberal arts major friends. Hopefully in this process I will learn these two skills and improve my posts.

Here's to a good first semester.
